There are quite a few great phones on the market that don't cost an arm and a leg. I would try to set up a small tab with Koodo (a phone valued up to $150 - the Moto G is an excellent choice) as you may not need the best credit.

Otherwise Koodo has a great prepaid section, you could either bring your own phone or purchase one from Koodo. In which case I'd recommend the Moto G ($150), Nexus 4 ($300) or the iPhone 4s ($300).

The only reason I would recommend steering away from prepaid is cause you usually get better prices with a lot more, ex. unlimited/more data.

Unless you need a ton of data or unlimited mins, prepaid actually offers better value.

Partially agreed. Postpaid does have its own advantages; it's Canada-wide, offers gift cards on some new activations, plus the phone prices aren't inflated.
Moto G is $250 on prepaid, not $150, and I don't think Koodo is able to offer the iphones on prepaid anymore, unfortunately.

Just took a look at the prepaid section and it doesn't look like the Moto G is there either.. do the standard koodo phones not work on prepaid because of the sim card/bandwidth?

SIM card yes, but bands have nothing to do with it because they're the exact same phone. Koodo just charges more for prepaid phones to discourage customers from not activating on their network. I don't blame them but I disagree with charging more for an outright/prepaid sale.
