Problems receiving text messages when I transfered from iPhone to Android (Samsung SIII), how do I stop this?

Hi There;
I bought a Samsung SIII coming from my crappy iPhone 5S. The weird thing that is happening though is anyone with an Apple product like my boyfriend, all their text messages still keep going to the iPhone which is really a problem. I shut the iPhone off, the SIM was deactivated and even taken out of phone but none of the messages from any iPhone/iPod (which is how my son gets in touch with me) are going to the Samsung. Then to receive the messages going to the iPhone i have to connect to a WI-FI connection for them to come through. So this is very inconvient as I am missing a lot of messages and my boyfriend and son can't get in touch with me via text which is how we generally communicate. So if I want to use my Samsung I have to also keep my iPhone on me and make sure i connect to a wi-fi connection every hour just to see if someone is trying to get a hold of me. Most of my friends also have iPhones so this isn't working but my iPhone is a piece of crap and I do not want to use it anymore.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there anyway to fix this?

Connect the iphone to wifi and turn off imessage. You may need to contact apple support though to get the phone unregistered from imessage immediately.

Yeah, basically iMessage is stupid and built into the iPhone's messaging application FOR SOME REASON.

What's suppose to happen is that the iPhone sends through iMessage because your number is tied to an Apple ID, then it sits in the iMessage server for a while, then Apple's server converts the message to SMS and sends it to Koodo's SMS server which sends it to you.

What always seems to happen is the iPhone sends through iMessage because your number is tied to an Apple ID, then it sits in the iMessage server FOREVER.

Calling Apple can get the number removed from their servers within the next 72 hours. Or you could always wait 45 days and it will be removed on its own.
Thanku for ur reply. So what it sounds like ur saying is if I don't call Apple Support and get my number off their servers I will not receive any iPhone/iPod messages on my SIII until after 45 days? I just don't get why the text aren't coming to the SIII at all. I could understand if they went to both but it sounds like the text kind of get stuck in the Apple servers and just don't get released unless to an Apple product. Anyways, Thanku very much. At least now I can fix the issue. Have a great day!
Thanku for ur reply. Much appriciated!

They aren't text messages, they're imessages. It's an instant messaging system specific to apple devices. Koodo can't deliver them because they aren't even seeing them.
