prepaid us roaming not working

I'm in Portland, Oregon, running android 6 on an Asus zenfone 2 laser (ze551kl). Purchased talk, text, and data roaming boosters before I left. I didn't get the same "welcome to the USA" text that others did as we crossed the border.

None of my roaming features are working. I've tried turning data roaming off/on, joining a network automatically/manually. Networks show up, but say "(forbidden)" after each network name. Rebooted my phone plenty.

Any ideas?

Interesting. Is this a Koodo phone, or one purchased from another supplier?

Not a koodo phone.

Then, I'm guessing there is something in the ROM that indicates it is not a Koodo phone, and the US networks do not recognize it as a Partner's device (thus the 'forbidden' notation adjacent to the network names). If it is an unlocked device, you could try a cheap SIM from one of the US carriers - see Walmart for purchase.

Thanks for the replies. Bought new & unlocked. Not rooted, no custom ROM. That said, Asus's version of android might be doing the same thing?

Have you tried a network reset? On your device, go to: Settings > Backup and reset - scroll down to and tap Reset network settings and follow the prompts.

If the phone worked on Koodo in Canada, there should be no reason for it to bark at you in the US. I ran an Android 6.0 LG G3 T-Mobile unlocked phone for months on Koodo prepaid US roaming without incident.

Will probably not accomplish more than rikkster's tip, but power down, pull the sim, power up (you'll get a no sim message), power down, re-insert the sim and power up again. That should flush any sim-related data from the phone.

If you do get a network reading, you will probably have more luck choosing AT&T rather than automatic.

Finally, you can send a private message on Facebook to Koodo to get your connection reset on their end.

@ KP, pls switch to manual search for networks on your phone. I believe that should fix it. Let us know. Thanks!

@BobTheElectrician, thx for the idea; still no luck.

@Bernard, I've been doing that. On the screenshot above, the list of networks showing "(forbidden)" populates after selecting the first choice (Search networks). If i try to join any of those, it doesn't work.

Where did you buy your phone?

Check your ESN here: https://swappa.com/esn

@Chad Burr - thx. Staples (Canada), a little over a year ago. ESN checks out fine: https://swappa.com/esn/shared/J9S1F0F9

Thinking of just continuing to make do with WiFi or picking up a cheap us SIM. Hopefully i can get my money back from koodo when I'm back in Canada.

I had the same problem (didnt see this post before I posted) My phone is an alcatel one touch (Bought through Koodo prepaid), I tried manual and automatic and was not able to use my purchased boosters in Los Angeles California area. https://community.koodomobile.com/koodo/topics/us-roaming-prepaid-add-ons-not-working?rfm=1&topi... Is this west coast specific?

@Tamara,

I don't think being on the West coast has anything to do with it.  It has to be some issue with our phones; unfortunately, I have no idea what it is.  On the same trip, my wife (iPhone 6, using Koodo prepaid, phone not purchased from Koodo) purchased the same boosters and had no problem.  She got the "welcome to the USA" text and her phone auto-detected and joined the network (AT&T, IIRC).

Fortunately, I had no trouble getting an account credit from Koodo when I returned.  Knowing what I know now, next time I'll just use a second SIM from a US carrier and not worry about roaming.
