I was checking my prepaid usage in self serve. There are three transactions showing data usage. However I don't have a data booster (I'm considering one though). This is what is shows-

23/08/2014 2:21 PM Web 0.507 MB MB $0.00

I'm on prepaid so I know I can't be charged data and I don't have a data booster.
My phone is a BB Q5 and the Data Services was switched to on. I turned it off now.

I use wifi.

I'm just curious if phones will still pick up data even if you don't have a booster or data plan?

Thanks!

Have you sent any picture messages? If so, that would explain the usage since sending/receiving picture messages uses data. By turning off data you've stopped yourself from being able to senf or receive messages. I recommend turning it back on since you're not charged data unless you have a booster

data doesn't need to be enabled for MMS on prepaid.

Can you post a screenshot of what self serve shows in terms of data use? It would be interesting to see how this would happen.

The Data leakage is strong with this one.

Looks like that without a booster that data use has managed to happen. Background data is strong.

However since you are prepaid with no data booster you need not worry. You can keep your data turned on with no risk of charges since it's prepaid and you haven't paid.

Hi Shelley,

According to the information you've provided, your BB Q5 used 507 kb of data while on the web. I'm not sure what the other two transactions amount to, or if that's the total of all three transactions, but that's a very small amount of data usage, slightly over half a megabyte.

I would recommend getting a data booster just for the fact that you'll have access to data whenever you need it. The data you're receiving now may not be reliable enough to surf the web, check email or look at a map for directions. To answer your other question, normally no. I'm on prepaid as well, I haven't seen this happen on my BB Z10, though the Q5 may be prone to data leakage as Dennis suggests.

Thanks for the help!

The other two transactions were less than 507 kb of data. I use wifi at home and coffee shops etc. I'm considering a data booster but may shut off the data setting when I'm in a wifi area (to save data for when I really need it).

The BB Q5 has strong data leakage?

Sorry it was a play on a Star Wars quote "The Force is strong with this one"

But the fact it registered data use without a data booster is impressive since that shouldn't happen

I really wouldn't worry too much about leaving data on, Shelley... I'm not too familiar with BB but if you set it to update apps and upload/download pictures on WiFi only, you should be good. The nice thing is we don't pay overage so if we go 1mb over what we planned, we can rest assured that'll only cost us 3 cents :D

Edit: oh I should probably clarify that: that is if we buy a 1GB booster for $30. Break that down and it's $0.03 per MB ;)
