I have Canada wise calling, but I am billed per minute to call USA. But by looking at a number I have no idea which is US and which is Canada number. A warning message saying it is USA number and I will be billed for it, will help me

Hello, I have the similar question. I use Koodo Home Phone and I do work from home on occasion. I am attending meetings and I do not recognize all the area codes I have to call. I will probably add the Long distance saver option or look into the unlimited US option but since this is happening on rare occasion, I am wondering if there is another option like a way to warn me that this area code is in US when making calls to US?

You could look up the list of Canadian Area Codes, since the list is short, and assume all others are USA calls.

When you call a long distance number you shoulf grt a message saying long distance charges may apply. If this isnt happening then just do what david said above.

That pre-recorded message will play even for those on Canada-wide calling plans. Not too useful.

Thanks, Yes I do get the message 'warning long distance charges may apply' but I get this message for canadian area codes as well even if I have no charges because Home phone includes canada wide calling. I will probably just add the $3 per month Long distance saver plan so I don't have more surprises of 1h30 call at $0.50 per minutes.... it gets expensive pretty quickly.

If you are going to be making a lot of calls to the US i would recommend the US Unlimited add-on. On the Long Distance Saver add-on a 90min call = 90 x 0.05 + $3/month = $7.50. The US Unlimted add-on is only $10/month. So if you plan on calling the US for more than 140min, the other add-on would be a better option for you.

OP never said he calls the US a lot, he's concerned about accidentally calling the US.

Please read all the comments before commenting. The above comment he said he made a one and a half hour call to the us in which a us unlimited add-on would be perfect if he planned to make another.

@Allan: OP didn't realize he was calling the US, doesn't seem to be a normal pattern of behaviour. The US calling add-ons would be perfect for those who regularly call the US, and need better call quality than Google Hangouts.

@OP: if you're unsure about an area code, you can look it up. If you see it in your calling history, I know Android phones are pretty good for displaying the Country/Province or State and even city of origin of the phone number.

To save on long distance calls to the US, if you have wifi or data coverage, you can make the outbound call via Hangouts Dialer. Free calling to Canada/US via Google Hangouts (on Android make sure to download and install "Hangouts Dialer" from Play Store). You can even configure it to display your cellphone number on outbound calls.
