Plans got me confused! :(

I have a blackberry. I got it a year ago, and because I've hurt it so much I want a new phone. Recently, I cut my plan down so now i have roughly 100$ on my tab, and only reducing at $1.5 each month. It's torture watching it go by so slowly.
My mom is suggesting that I get an iPhone 4 for two years, on Telus or Bell and switch away from Koodo. I originally said no, but when I went and looked at the plans now - as I want to switch to a better plan, I was horrified at the prices. My original 20$ plan is now 30$. It's too much money now!
The Prepaid plans look okay but I'm not sure if they are worth it. I'm not sure if i want BBM anymore, but I'm not sure about doing anything big for a year or so. Should I buy a new prepaid phone? Or wait with mine for a year? What should I do about my plan (I can't stay with this one), and what would be cost effective for the Tab? (I dont want to have to spend 100$ on it just to move on..)

Having lots of trouble - so any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

You can sure keep your plan if you like it! The only thing it changes is you're gonna have to get a phone by your own means, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you want to keep things cheap, there's the BB 9320 in the Koodo refurbished section for a cool $100 since you know the platform already. This would keep you going for some more time until you decide what you do next.

But under no circumstances do you need to drop your plan!

Your Tab will continue to go down by itself slowly, but surely. Remember: the Tab is tied to your account, not to your phone. :)

It depends on how you use your phone. If it is mainly for text and the occasional low volume data & voice then prepaid is definitely worth it.

However if you enjoy your $15/$20 plan then remember if you ever decide to change to something else, you can only select plans that are currently available.

I would also recommend checking Kijiji for a low cost phone

Like what TopperCNC said, Prepaid is good for those who mostly text and use a small amount of voice and data. The lowest Prepaid base plan is $15 per month and you get unlimited texting, caller ID, voicemail. You can add boosters like the $25 - 500 talk minute booster, so you can make calls. As long as you pay your base plan, the boosters will roll over to the next month so you can keep using your remainder amounts.

You can also refer people to Koodo and get 25 tab credits in return. I did that and I literally dropped from -100 to +30. It takes 4-6 weeks to process however so it won't be instantaneously.

Or you can get a new phone yourself because the tab is with your account. You can change plans and phones any time.

Sophia (one of the Mobile Masters around here) has a great link that helps (unofficial) decide between post paid and pre paid.
