Hi Teresa,

It seems like your number was used by a spammer (most likely from overseas, Europe, Asia, Africa) to simulate a Canadian number. Now, first of all the good news: you need not worry, YOUR account and number are safe. Your number just happened to have been randomly put into a computer that the spammers use.

The BAD news is that there is nothing you can do about this except ride it out. It's happened to us as well and it is NOT pretty... we chose to change our number. We even got nasty threats from people we obviously never even called. If you are not too attached to your number, you could consider changing yours as well.

However, let's finish with positive news again :) Usually those spammers get tired of using a number after a few days, so the angry callers who accuse you of spamming them will die out soon.

Sorry this has happened to you :(

It is dead simple to spoof any phone number - all you need is a VOIP account. Your phone number might have been the one chosen by a telemarketer to make the calls they make look local. Not much anyone can do about it.

On many VoIP accounts, you can cut off anybody not calling from your server. Easy to cut off spammers at the knees.

But as dfbutt points out, it's dead easy to re-route or spoof calls.

Best prophylactic advice: never answer unknown callers, in the same way you never click on unwanted email. Often, those ba*&^%rds, just want to verify a legal email address or phone number.

Your reputation is then partially in their hands.
