are you running a mac or windows? and if windows, what version?

Possibly you need drivers. I know that doesn't make sense since your computer sees them, but windows has a habit of slapping a one size fits all drivers on phones, and it can cause issues interfacing with the actual phone software you're running on your computer

windows 7. i downloaded and installed the drivers from the LG website and then installed the upgrade tool

now i am being told by LG that no upgrade is available for my carrier, even though it explicitly states on the carrier's website that i need up upgrade the version that i am currently running.

K, well try a reboot if you haven't already. That and what version of android is your optimus one running right now?

Edit: Reboot both the phone and computer for giggles

version 2.2.1. rebooting doesn't make a difference. koodo is telling me there is an update available but LG is saying there isn't, and that's why the update tool is not working. what fun.

Can you post the URL of the page telling you that you need to update?

Well, actually the site is correct. There WAS an update, obviously they are not offering it anymore.

If you really want that update, check out the optimus one section on xda:

Heads up that rooting and what not will void your warranty, but I'm guessing your warranty is probably expired by now anyway.

The advantage of rooting is that it's completely reversible. Un-rooting your device is a fairly simple procedure. The only way you'll void the warranty is if you send your device back to the manufacturer or Koodo in its rooted state.
