You're holding the number too long. Press it once, fast and don't hold down on it for too long.

Thank you for the suggestion but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Up until now I would flip open the phone and enter the number. Now as soon as I start the screen shows a speed dial screen that I have not knowingly activated. I don't know how to deactivate it.

Might you be stuck in the speed dial menu? Does pressing the 'Back' button (next to the right arrow navigation key) fix the problem?

What happens if you restart the phone?

Here is a manual.

I am in the US until the end of February . I discovered by accident that if I push the number key I am able to enter a phone number and send it. I'm afraid to try any more suggestions until I return home in case it affects my new discovery. At home if the suggestions don't work I will call support with my land line.
