Notifications coming in late

I have 2 Alcatel One Touch Idol 3's. During the work day, the data connection on both of them is turned off. After being 9-10 hours without an Internet connection (no wifi or data), I turn on data on my commute home. I'd think that all my email notifications and other notifications would come up pretty quickly, but the notifications come in about half an hour or so after turning data on. However, if I connect to wifi they come straight through right away so I'm thinking it might be something with the data settings. Help?

If your phone has been off for some time, it will be a while before messages get caught up. If SWMBO leaves her phone off while at work while I am travelling, she'll give me Royal $h!t for not keeping in touch, and then all the messages I sent her appear.

Seems the periods between when the system tries to send your SMS get longer as the phone is left turned off.  in other words, your phone does not call for the SMS to be sent you, but rather the system polls every so often to see if you're there.
