when getting a new phone is it better to use up the charge, or take it home and charge it.The manual says to charge it before use, at the store they say use up the charge and then charge it

In general, it's always best to follow the instructions of the manufacturer. In this case it helps to condition the battery. Take it home and charge it.

I'd personally follow the manual, John: take it home and charge it before use. Though truth be told I don't think it matters that much, those modern batteries can take anything :)

I'm with Ahmad. The days of "memory effect" of batteries are gone. It used to be of some concern up until the mid nineties. Not anymore.
