New plan with old phone

I have my own phone (iphone 5) and I am considering getting a Koodo plan for it, as my current phone contract is up soon.
How would this work? Would I not have to pay a monthly tab? Would I be able to stop the plan at any time?

Get your phone unlocked by your current carrier while your account is still active. You will be responsible for any residual charges with your current supplier if you bail out of your current contract early, so let it run it's course. Do not cancel your old contract.

Visit a Koodo boutique with your phone in hand. Since you are bringing your own phone to Koodo, you only need a SIM, and there will be no tab to pay. You can choose from any of the current crop of plans, and your current number can be ported over to your Koodo account at that time.

You own your phone outright without any tab so you can quit Koodo at any time without penalty.
