my Samsung ace II "messaging has stopped. How do I re-start?

Yes I did. I also looked at application, settings for messaging and it looked fine

Settings > Applications manager - select the All tab and as Chad mentioned, locate the Messaging app and clear it's cache. I used GO SMS Pro and it works quite well with the Ace 2x. Only other thing you'll have to do is turn off Notifications in your stock messaging app.

This is done by tapping Messaging envelope on your Home screen. Once inside the app, tap the Menu key to the left of the centre Home button, then tap Settings. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and uncheck the box under Notifications. This will prevent the Ace 2x from showing duplicate notifications when using GO SMS Pro.

In Go SMS Pro's advanced settings, there's also an option to completely override the stock messaging app.

Not too sure what kind of bug this is but sometimes a battery reset fixes most problems. Turn off your phone, then take out the battery, wait 30 seconds - 1 minute and then put it back in. Restart the device and see what happens.
