If the phone is saying invalid SIM, it is most likely still locked to a US carrier.

It could also be blacklisted, but we won't go down that road yet.....

Don't know how else to ask. I have a semi similar issue. Got a new phone, iPhone 5SE. My old phone is iPhone 4. Never outright said this but I asked which iOS this phone had because my phone could get iOS 9. I didn't have my old phone with me. She never said I would need a new SIM card but I do! What can I do? I don't have time to go back probably until Friday and I want my new phone fully useable today!

You can cut the old sim card but you run the risk of damaging it. Or continue to use your old iPhone 4 untol you can get the correct sim card. Check to see if there are any Koodo retailers around you.
