Make sure the contact isnt blocked, try restarting your phone, try resetting your network settings.
Can they send texts to your phone number or can they send iMessages to other people? Do the iMessages actually read as sent on their phone, are they using the right number, email, etc?

I believe it is because you are all using the same Apple ID. That tends to screw up iMessage.

I haven't owned an iPhone in years, but I believe you can go into the iMessage settings on the phones and change the to/from settings. You would have to check/change them on both phones that share the ID.

Ah I see, turn off iMessage for both iPhones. I recommend creating a separate Apple ID. You can still link both Apple ID by Family Share later.

With iMessage, you can only register one phone number. If anyone iMessage you to that number it will go to both iPhones with similar Apple ID. The other number that is not registered to iMessage will not receive any iMessage. Thus, a pop up will continually show asking if you want to use your number for iMessage if detects that it is using a different number.

I use two iPhone, one for business and one personally. I had this problem before and I realized it was the Apple ID.

Yeah that's the problem, two phone numbers are using your Apple ID. Your MacBook will have no issue receiving your iMessage because it doesn't have its own phone number,

You can click this link from Apple if you need help correcting the phone number connected to your Apple ID: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201349

But as it states, "These steps work only with the phone number that belongs to your iPhone, not the phone number of ... other device." The next step after this is to create an Apple ID for your wife and enable Family Sharing.
