My phone number belongs to someone else, someone from Italy. I am being disturbed by numbers that I do not know and each time and I need to send them message. I understood it is the case as my friends tried to add me on whatsapp and saw a different profile. How could it be possible? How would you fix it?

What do you mean, someone from Italy? Numbers in Italy start with +39 and numbers in Canada with +1... I'm puzzled what you mean.

Basically that is my question the number that called me last night was 011 39... and different numbers starting with 011 39... texted me several times calling me Marco?? and continuing with Italian words. I am not Marco at all. And my whatsapp profile belongs to Marco! Maybe Marco is in Canada I do not know but we have same number. Because in my whatsapp profile he has a picture not me!

Didern, did you just change to this number?

All numbers are recycled after they have been deactivated after many months.

Your options are to tell them this is your number or you can change your number.

As for whatsapp, it means the previous person has not deleted their account before giving up their number. In time Whatapp will remove this info

I did not change my number- I have started to use Koodo last month and it was Koodo who assigned me this number and it is Koodo's repsonsibility to check whether the numbers that they give to their new customers are really recycled or still being used. I have been in many countries and used different mobile companies' sim cards and never experienced such an awkward thing. Is it your company policy to give unused numbers to new customers?

And since it is your fault why I am going to text everyone that disturbs me during nights? And since I already gave my number to all people on my network, I need to text all people in my directory if I change my number? I am wondering how Koodo would compensate its mistake.

Are you sure someone else is still using it?
What happens when you reply to those people who mistakenly contact you?

I had an old number that was disabled for over a year and when i sign up and still I get calling looking for them. And this is years later. It happens with all numbers.

Aside from the options I gave, the only other option is to contact Koodo (*611 on your koodo cell, its a free call) and see what they can do.

Thanks Dennis. When I write them back, they generally do not answer but just one of them said sorry. Unfortunately, *611 does not answer, they are always busy.

It is the policy of every carrier in the world, Didem :) ALL numbers are always recycled after a while, you just didn't notice it before :) The previous owner let their number expire, and after a couple of months an unused number is reassigned to another customer. There are not two people in Canada with the same number simultaneously though, if that is what you are worried about.

You can change your number for free in self service, or wait it out till people know the number has a new owner. It could take a while though, when we were assigned our landline number, we got phone calls for a certain "Bruce" for years and then it finally stopped... we could have changed our number but had already given it to all our friends and relatives. Eventually people got the message...

There is not much you can do about it except the two options already mentioned: change your number or wait it out :)

Well Sophia, if I still get messages from Marco's friends, it is obvious that it is still being used. It is not recyled obviously, after a while! What you mean by "a while" is open to interpretation.

There is clearly another option which is ending my Koodo subscription and starting with another mobile company.
Thanks Sofia for showing me this option!

You're quite welcome, just a heads up that people can send a message to that number, thinking it still belongs to their friend. If this "Marco" did not inform them that the number changed, and they send a message to "his" number, it goes to you because you are the owner of that number now.

I don't work for Koodo, I am just a volunteer here. If you choose to go to another company that is your choice... but the same thing might happen again. It's up to you though!

If 2 people have the same number and the lines are mixed (it can happen, rare but possible) I would confirm with marco's friends if this is the exact case.

And I would call Koodo to straighten this up. usually with a problem like this you find out right away. Ex. U would send a message and Marco's phone gets it. Or someone calls and only you receive the calls (never marco)
