I'm moving to Japan in a few months and I'm wondering what I can do with my phone, basically what options do I have? I have a Nexus 5, so am I able to use it in Japan with a SIM card there?

Hi Anthony,

That's correct, the Nexus 5 is factory unlocked so it will work on any network. So just pop in a sim card and away you go.

Hope that helps :)

Nice, fast reply! It covers that question, yes thank you! I'm wondering also, what would I do with my current SIM card, number and plan? I'd be gone from 6 to 12 months.

If you want to keep your number active I'd recommend putting your account on a seasonal hold, which is $15/month. Keep in mind that it only lasts for 6 months. Also when you decide to switch to a different plan you will need to choose one of Koodos plans at that time as your old plan will not be available anymore.

The old simple card maybe expired & # given away if not been updated with credit after a limited time

Oh, that's no good. I have a great plan and I'd hate to lose it. I guess the bonus is that I would be able to keep my number. I'd almost be better off just to pay off my Koodo tab and cancel the contract. At least I'd have my Nexus 5 payed off and I could use it in Japan as well as when I return. Someone mentioned attaching my number to a Google Voice account, but I'm not sure that would be affected if I did pay off and cancel my service.. Any other ideas or suggestions?

I believe you'd have to still have your account active to be able to transfer it to Google Voice. I'd recommend contacting Google support for more details in regards to it. I can't think of anything else to suggest other than what you mentioned or what I mentioned previously especially if you wanted to come back to Koodo and still have your account active.

Ultimately it's your decision as to what you think will work best for you.

At least I know what I'll have to do now. Thanks.
