It's a business decision that Koodo chose. Koodo sells the 8GB Moto G without removable memory (micro sd slot)

It may not be a Koodo business decision if Rogers/Fido has negotiated Canadian exclusivity for the LTE version, as Telus/Koodo did with the original G. Presumably, Motorola finds it more lucrative to work solely with the carriers and deny Canadians retail access to unlocked phones.

I've done a little looking around, and Canada is the only market where unlocked Motorola phones are not available at retail (and at street prices comparable to those in the US), in addition to any carrier deals that may also exist. It sucks to be us... :)

Depending on how long you've been with Koodo, your current plan might be better than what's currently offered by Fido. Plus, if you ever want to upgrade with Fido in the future, there's a $25 administration fee and customer service doesn't waive it.

Steps:

1) Go to Rogers or Fido kiosk and buy Moto G LTE outright
2) Walk across mall to Koodo kiosk with Moto G LTE in hand
3) Pay $35 to unlock Moto G LTE (or DIY on eBay for $5, your choice)
4) Pick up microSIM and insert into newly unlocked Moto G LTE
5) Keep likely-better-than-Fido Koodo plan and enjoy new phone

Shouldn't steps 2 and 3 be reversed. If the phone was bought from Fido then doesn't Fido have to unlock it rather than Koodo?

Koodo now unlocks phones that are sourced from other providers. It's a new service, and it's $35, same price as a Koodo phone.

You would just take your existing one out of your Moto G and put it into the Moto G LTE. No new sim card required. No problem!
