Moto Z Play USB C data cable?

I have had my Moto Z Play since Xmas.  Now I want to transfer some music over to the phone. I bought a USB A to USB C cable but when I plug it in neither the PC or phone seem to see each other. In the phones HELP files I see the transfer via USB info but it mentions "swipe down and change the USB usage type". I take it they mean from Charge to Data. I do NOT see that box or any link to changing the USB function.   Did I buy the correct cable?

That could be the case. Some cables dont transfer data so you may have to get another one.
Your computer may not have the drivers installed for your phone either (it should do that automatically), so you can look into that.
I would suggest using the cable that came with your phone as this one is guaranteed to work so you will be able to find out if there are problems elsewhere.

Thanks, David, that site was much easier ti read.  I see now I did get the wrong cable. When I compared the charging USB C to the one I bought I realised they are a slightly different shape.  I went looking on Amazon and am quite sure I have found the proper one.  It says it's a data cable that will fit Apple and Google Nexus phones. Magnified it looks like the one I need.  I will check back in when it shows up.  Should be middle of next week.

Thanks
Ken

You need a USB A to USB C cable. Apple phones use a Lightning connector, though their new MacBooks do use a USB C.  I picked a cable up at The Source. Maybe a bit more expensive than Amazon, but I could confirm it fit!

Ahh sorry, the North American model doesn't but others do come with a separate cord. My bad, thanks David!

I used a magnifying glass to look at the Z Play charging connector and the shape is not the same as the one I  bought.  The new one I have coming looks identical as far as the "shape".  I realise the internal pinout must be different.  Bit strange they don't include a data cable.

Care to share a link to your choice of cable on Amazon?
The comment about it connecting to Apple phones has me confused.
Also Nexus phones use Micro USB

Great. Do keep this brand in mind for the future as it's one of the trusted cheap brands. See my reply below for reason to avoid bargain-basement USB C cables.

If you're patient (and for some reason I was very patient), I ordered on ebay item # 142097180589. At $1.13 a piece, I ordered two of them. They arrived faster than any of the other Moto Z Play accessories I ordered around the same time.

Even if you already grabbed a USB micro to type C adapter or USB type C data cable, I recommend grabbing a couple adapters off eBay because you never know when they'll come in handy (and they're so cheap).

I'm all for savings, but there's been such a problem with non-compliant cables and adapters that I don't recommend going with the generic eBay option.

I do have some adapters lying around for emergency purposes - data transfer and topping up when I'm near the phone but I don't recommend using these overnight or unsupervised.

Here is what I bought yesterday.  Like I said, the 1st one I bought did not have the same C end.  It did not have the rounded sides like this one does.

@Ivan: that's a first. I don't plan on using it unattended or overnight...just for ABD/Fastboot.
