Did you have imessages on, or do you have another Apple device such as an iPad which does have iMessages on?

If you have never used iMessage, I'm stumped. If you have, you may need to de-register iMessage on Apples's website, or ask your correspondents to delete past conversations and start new ones to you.

Carol, try texting yourself. You should recieve back the text that you send. Let us know if you recieve anything back after trying this. You should recieve the text immediately.

There could be a lot of different things wrong. Go through the steps on the following link and one of the steps should fix it.

You should just have to swipe to the left on the conversation you want to delete.

Swipe left on the conversation, and a delete option appears. You usually need to delete the whole conversation, not the individual messages within it.

To delete entire conversations, go to the first screen in your messages app, (the one that lists all the different conversations), and tap 'edit' in the top left corner. Then pick all the ones you want to remove and tap delete. For individual messages in a thread, I believe you tap and hold until a menu pops up, then choose more and edit.
