Will there be a Marshmallow update for S4s? If so what's the estimated ETA ?

I don't think so, the phone is already 3 years old. I think the cutoff was the S5.

For future reference most companies update their phones for around 18 months and in rare cases stretch it to 24 months. So if your looking for updates on phones you should get a new phone every 2 years or sooner.

If your tech savy and can learn easy. There Is an unlimited supply of custom ROMS for that device. Just use google or YouTube to figure it out as that's what I did and now I'm pretty good at it.

I've dabbled with custom Roms back when i had my S2. It was great, but speed and performance came at the expense of battery life and camera quality. Both are very important to me. Is that still the case? Do have experience with S4s and custom roms ?

Not specifically the S4 no, But yes Kernels have changed since then, There is so many of them that are either built into good ROMS already, or that you can flash as long as the ROM will allow it. There is so much support online. You just need to master the model number or version number of your specific device. As the U.S variant will have a different number or name.
