Make BYOD discount match tab rewards and/or make subsidies separate

The BYOD discount is 10%, and the tab balance rate is 15%. To really be equitable here, the BYOD would be 15% as well.

Even better though, would be a reform of the tab system.
Presently: tab small is 'built in' to monthly rates, tab medium/large are extra. (ie. Koodo is willing to 'pay back' part of your fee) It's muddy at best.
Instead, advertise monthly rates at the BYOD prices, and then all tabs would be in addition to that price. It'd make your rates more appealing at first glance, and also make the subsidies more transparent.

Pitch it as a zero-interest device financing scheme. If you finance the phone, it'd be $(phone cost / 24) added to each monthly bill, with declining balance as always.

Price of phone, over 24 months, on bill. Removes tab system and simpifies it. Now easier to make plans cheaper and no need for outrageous $50+ rate plans.

It's so obvious it's the best way to go that it gets me wondering why no carrier in Canada has implemented this yet. Maybe when the Big3 had their meeting last July "confusion" was the topic of the day, I dunno.

It's been mentioned by someone else in another thread, but I've seen it myself. Customers (or soon-to-be) at the kiosk are flabbergasted when they're explained the new Tab system, even if the rep does an outstanding job selling it. It would be much easier to sell a phone like this:

"There ma'am, your plan costs $25 every month. Your phone will cost you $6.25/month for the next 24 months. Total is $31.25 a month, plus taxes. Thank you very much, and have a nice day."

And then there'd be me, shopping for a BYOD plan and enjoying the savings (because better plans, right?)....

No carrier in Canada has implemented that yet because we've always accepted their practices. When we start complaining with our wallets rather than words, you'll see the changes here as well.

UK carriers have impressed me more than anyone when it comes to price, value, and clarity.

Take Vodafone UK for example. Their most basic plans are SIM only, ranging from 11-28 GBP per month (the top being unlimited calling/SMS + 2 GB data + 750 MB UK Wi-Fi). If you sign a 12 month SIM-only contract, they'll reduce the monthly price of each plan by 2 GBP and give you another top-tier option for 31 GBP/month (same as the other top plan but 4 GB of data). For your reference, 31 GBP = CA$ 50 and their prices are inclusive of taxes. so $50 over there is actually $50, not $56.50 (Ontario).

The 4 GB plan for an iPhone 5 is 47 GBP and the phone itself is free on a 24 month contract. That's 16 GBP extra per month which amounts to 384 GBP over 2 years. It costs 529 GBP to buy that phone outright, saving you 145 GBP over 2 years.

Not that I think that BYOD customers are being treated as well as they could, but the 15% Tab contribution only applies to the negative Tab in order to help pay off the phone as much as possible in the 24 month timeline as set out by the CRTC. Once the Tab reaches 0 the Tab contribution automatically goes down to 10% so that's why the BYOD discount hasn't changed.

I'm seriously hoping that with added competitive pressures that a carrier like Verizon brings, the standard practices are seriously shaken up. I'm very much ready for a change.
