LG K4 - foreign SIM card not allowing data connection

I have an LG K4 phone. I'm travelling outside Canada and so, I want to get a local SIM card. However, my phone does not allow the data to be connected. It is unlocked. Everything else works (i.e calling, texting). There is no problem with the SIM card (it works on other phones). Any solutions?

Hi CB,
As you are travelling and used other carrier SIM, have you checked if the network was compatible with the K4? Also, try to restart and reset the network settings and see if it could do anything.

Btw, which country is it? And which carrier?

Vietnam, the carrier is Mobifone.

How do I check if the network is compatible with K4?

Thank you!

Normally the website will my phone work https://willmyphonework.net/ will tell you. However, the Canadian model wasn't there. Do you have the bands for the canadian model?

Mobiphone is using 2G/3G 900/1800 and B1 UMTS.

Also, as other suggested, APN settings could be the problem.

Also make sure the APN settings for that specific carrier are entered into the APN settings fields of the device

Here's a site that covers international carriers and APN settings:

I had the same problem in a couple countries that need manual APN configuration. You should be fine once you do that. Maybe restart your phone after as well.

If the APN config doens't fix it, try a Network Reset.

Thanks all for your input!

Still no luck though.
When I try to check the APN, a pop-up msg comes on that says:
"Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped."
It won't let me access it at all. I've also re-started the phone as well as factory reset it - still nothing.

I've tried going to a different phone carrier and even with them, they couldn't get the data to connect.

I also visited an LG service centre here, but because this model isn't sold in this country, they couldn't really help either.

But based on https://willmyphonework.net/, it seems like 2G might work with my current carrier. I got 4G so I'll have to talk to them.

@CB did you try a network reset?  If that didn't fix it, then I'm afraid your phone may be one of the LG models that has an incredibly annoying and inconvenient quirk requiring a factory reset in order to use data on a different network provider.  I know many of the G-series, I believe G2, G3, G4, and G5, but possibly others as well, have this bug.  Sometimes a network reset is sufficient to resolve it and get the data flowing, but others a full factory reset is the only thing that works.  I hope you're not in the latter group, as it's incredibly inconvenient to do, and doubly-so while travelling.
