LG G3 - How to change APN from default

Recently signed my daughter up with the recent Walmart promotion for the Lg G3 with the $175 GC.   Anyway, am trying to set her phone up like the rest of us on our account.  I have a Windows phone and my son & wife have an Android phone.  With those phones I could add new APN's and change them from the default Koodo one. Reason for this is we have no data plans to save money, but know you need data open to receive MMS messages.  But with the LG while you can add APN's, there is no button to check to change from the default Koodo APN to the ones I made. (spp.koodo.com) They are in the list of APNs, but cant select them.   This trick has worked for the last two years on our phones without accidently using data and getting charged. Anone know why you cant with the new Android system.   Our other phones aren't unlocked either, just phones from Koodo

Yes well it doesn't work with every phone. This one may be one of the few that it doesn't.

You cod try unlocking the device but there is no guarantee it'll work.

Hope that's not the case, just saves a lot of pain and worry of data charges the way we have it on the other phones.  For now we have data blocked so no pictures until we get it figured out

Are you sure that the spp.koodo.com has the apn type set to default or Internet? If it's just set to Mms you won't be able to select it.

Set to Internet.  I got my sons phone and compared the settings on his.   We now have two of these phones in the house, so would like to figure this out.  For now the both have data blocked until then

Have you tried creating a New APN and then turn off the original one?

My post says I added a new one, and they do show up in the APN list.  But there is no place to check it to make it the default.  With the other phones, you have that option

Hi Ken, I recently got an LG G3 and was able to set it up following the method in this thread: https://community.koodomobile.com/koodo/topics/sending-receiving-mms-but-no-data-on-plan

It has worked for me and I am able to select it.  It is strange that you cannot.  Maybe delete the APNs and try putting the info in again?

I am, however, having another problem.  Even though I have it set up properly, and it works correctly MOST of the time, randomly the phone will connect to data (when I'm not even using it) and so I will get charged $5 each month for using data.

That's the problem I'm having. It's rather annoying because it didn't happen at all with my old phone (Nexus S). I'm just having to turn off data when I'm not on WiFi until it gets fixed.

To me, as a consumer, they should have a buffer for this.  When I called I said 100 and some Kilobytes obviously isn't me surfing.  Seems to be the Android platform that does it, my windows phone uses none when using this hack

After typing this, my daughter got a text she has used up 50% of her data plan, its the cheap $30 one with the 100MB.  It also is setup so when it reaches 100MB her data will be shut off.  Which is what she wants and so do I for accidental overages.  Looking at the history seems a lot of the data is from the first two days, even if she was using wi fi.  After I set this up, the data is like .02 MB a day.  Looked at the other numbers on the account, and its the same, some phone use .01MB one day, then it goes a few days before another usage of maybe .02 or .03,   So even with this trick, windows or android, they still bypass it some how.  Whatever app that needs to update may cause the data leakage.  Doesn't seem to be a 100% lock down.

Ever since they added the 100MB buffer for the same $28 price tag, we have never had the issue of the $5 over for each phone line.  Maybe Koodo was getting sick of people calling in obviously not using data, and wanting the refund each month.  Knowing full well that data leakage happens.  And until they get it figured out on how to picture message without this type of data, next best solution

I'm glad that they introduced the low dollar plans with the 100MB of data to combat the accidental $5 charge issue. Billing systems are automated. There isn't someone sitting behind a computer manually adding charges to people's accounts.

However they are unable to change the fact that picture messages use data. That is how the cell networks are made and how the phones are programmed. The carriers don't have control of everything.

It was nice they added that 100MB for the same price we were originally paying, sure saves time every month calling in.  I always got the $5 reversed, in fact after talking with a manager on duty he understood what I meant, and it was just added to my account when I called to reverse it.  Im sure there were thousands every month calling in.  As for the MMS, just the nature of the beast, at least they found a work around that works for everyone, at least for the saving money part,

Still makes me curious, what app, or what causes this "ghost data"  I still think its picture messaging of sorts.  I sent a picture to my entire cell phone one Friday after work, and I got a text saying I was using a lot of data, or something of the like.  That was before the 100MB addition.  I guess a person could check to see if MMS sent go with the days that data is shown used
