If you want to send a group message as a single text it must be sent as a picture message (mms). This means that data must be switched on. This is simply the way the text messaging system is designed, there is no way to attach multiple recipients to a single sms message. The only reason it worked on iPhone is that you were using iMessage, which is an apple specific instant messaging program.
Go into your text messaging settings and look for this option:

I do not have those options! Maybe programming is wrong?

I know how the iPhone works and I know android based systems can do go up as well but there isn't an option to set it up on my phone at all.

While in your messenger app go to settings>Advanced and the option Timo mentioned may be there.
Depends what messenger app you are using.

Nope got nothing. Both my husband and I are missing those options. We are using the messaging app that came with but I tried a bunch more apps. I hate when people tell me a phone works for what I want and doesn't. Can't bring phone back I think I used it too much. Now have a tab I have to deal with before I can purchase another phone. Grrrr

Can you post a screenshot (volume down + power) of the options you DO see?

Then look under Text message or Multimedia message. Android looks different across manufacturer's devices because it's modified/skinned for their design.

Sabina.    I user the Messenger app by Google Inc. from the Play store and it does have the Group messaging option you are looking for.
Try downloading it and it should meet your needs.

And the settings to get there as I mentioned above;
While in your messenger app go to settings>Advanced and the MMS Group messaging option is 1st thing on the page.
