With my iPhone 5 on Koodo LTE network, I get 1 bar. When I switch to 3G network, I get 4 bars. Why is that?

Probably because you are just in range of an LTE tower and are closer to a 3g tower.
If you notice your battery draining faster than you'd like try switching to 3g only on your device and it may give you some better battery life because it's not trying hard to pull in that LTE signal.

Yeah, 3G is older and slower but it uses less battery and retains its signal strength more because it's at least a decade old network. LTE coverage is good but not quite the mainstay standard yet.

I've turned off LTE on my phones and gotten slightly better battery life out of them. You should try it yourself when you leave the house.
