I decided to go with Koodo prepaid back in August after buying my first phone: iPhone 6 directly unlocked from the Apple Store. I went with Koodo for a month, then afterwards I switched to Koodo monthly since they had a promotion going on. Now, I put in a new SIM card that is not Koodo, it says it is invalid and I did an IMEI search saying my phone is locked to Telus (Koodo...). Was this allowed?!?! My phone was brought into Koodo, not bought from Koodo!! Please help!!

That definitely should not be happening if you paid full price for it at the Apple store.. I suggest you get in touch with Koodo and talk to them.

There is such a thing slipped underfoot as a "regional unlock" that I have seen Staples advertise fin their circulars for some Samsung phones, also heard mentioned indirectly with some Apple products.

Please keep us informed.

I would speak with Apple.

I assume your Koodo sim still works In The phone?

There is a slight chance of your phone getting locked again if you do it through third-parties, but because you did it through the Apple store, it should remain unlocked. I would call Apple or Koodo.

I think what happened is Apple gave you a SIM-free iPhone instead of a factory unlocked one.

The difference is a SIM-free iPhone will lock to the first carrier SIM you put in. Whereas a factory unlocked iPhone will stay unlocked forever.

Definitely contact Apple to see if that was the case and find out if they can assist you further.

If I recall, phones bought in the USA lock to the SIM you install, while those purchased in Canada are supposedly unlocked. This is evident from the two online shops, as the Canadian store discusses unlocked phones and travelling with a local SIM, but the USA store only provides info on roaming.
