Why did I switch carriers to get worse than dial up when I am connected to my home internet?

I'm not sure what you mean. If your internet speeds are bad while you are connected to your home internet than that has nothing to do with Koodo. It has to do with your ISP.

Or a connection issue with your specific device, a manufacturer’s defect.

Took me about twenty minutes at home, next to my modem, to make a complaint. But I did, because that’s how upsetting it is

Is Koodo your home isp? Still confused how modem issues are a Koodo problem?

When you are connected to your home wifi, you are using the the connection of your home internet provider and not using Koodo's cellular data network.  Try using your wifi with another device.... do you see the same issue?

Also you would want to be closer to your router, not your modem. My modem is downstairs in the corner of my house where my router is in the upstairs opposite corner.
