The Galaxy S2x just got 4.1 Jelly Bean not 4.2 Not many phones at all have 4.2 yet, only the Nexus phones and the new Galaxy S4 as far as I know. The Galaxy S2x has been said to be done with updates with 4.1 or 4.2 depending who you ask but if it does get 4.2 it won't be for probably 4 months or so.

You can flash via Odin and get the firmware (link to the site below) provided you have one of the S2 variants in the list. If it's the GT-I9100 – Galaxy S II, it's not available yet using this method. I've used Odin to flash CM 10.1 nightly, (less stable, some bugs) or just the release candidate 10.0 which is a stable version. CyanogenMod or CM 10.0 incorporates JB 4.1.1/4.1.2, while CM 10.1 nightly includes JB 4.2.2.

CyanogenMod stuff for the GT-i9100.

The S2 official 4.2 is the same and would be at a very minimum 4 months away. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will get it months before the S2 and neither of them have it yet and I'd say they're at least another month away from getting it on the non carrier branded models of those 2 models. If your really wanting 4.2 on your S2 and don't care if it's the official then Rikkster's suggestions are the way to go.

Most devices FROM Samsung are skipping 4.2 and moving straight to 4.3. Now that said Chances are pretty slim that the S2x will see 4.3 officially at all as it's almost a 3 year old phone now, 4.1 will probably be the last update for it officially. There will be custom ROM's available to flash if you are really wanting newer updates or purchase a new phone.

The links below are where you'll find all the information you'll need for custom ROMs. The majority of custom ROMs are built on the U.S. variant of the S2x, code named 'Hercules' and you'll see many references made regarding the SGH-T989 which is identical to our SGH-T989D. I'd recommend CyanogenMod ROMs for beginners.

Their ROMs are stable, install easily and can be used as your daily driver. Once you become more proficient with flashing custom ROMs, you can experiment with other custom ROMs. There's a fair amount of reading ahead and one of the first things you should do is root your S2x and perform a Nandroid backup or full system backup. Rooting instructions are found at the link below:

Usual disclaimer applies; rooting your device will void the manufacturers warranty and any modifications are done so at your own risk. That said, if you carefully read and follow all steps, you shouldn't run into any problems.
