Is there a way to turn off BBM on a Blackberry Q5? Also will I be charged for using BBM if I am on WiFi?

There is no way to shut it off or sign out. It's a major part of the BlackBerry ecosystem. Many apps will use it to verify themselves. It's almost like the heart of BlackBerry 10

What you can do is edit your profile to not give BBM notifications any visible or audible cues that a message has been received.

Just pull down the settings menu from the top of the home screen
Choose notifications - BBM - All Alerts (move the slider to off) see screen shot below
Note: your screen may vary since I'm running a 10.2 leak and a beta version of BBM

You will not be charged data use to use BBM over wifi

You can, just keep in mind you will still be getting any incoming messages you just won't get led alerts or sound for them.

You can also go to hub management and remove BBM from hub notifications so they only show up on their own line

To so this open the hub

Press the three stacked dots on the lower right and choose settings

Then choose hub management

I
Slide BBM off & Now your messages will only show on the BBM line and not in your hub view

I guess my biggest concern is not having to pay extra charges since I don't have BBM add on.

As long as you use it over wifi and not data you should be fine even without the BBM add on

None of what I'm showing you here will decrease the level of data BBM will use however that data is minuscule in the grand scheme of things. You could also just not use BBM if you're not sure of it.

OR

Grab a plan with a gb data for a few months until you can figure out what your usage will be and then once you know you can change your plan to one that suits your use.

You can change your plan through self serve for free once per billing cycle.

Then you don't have to worry about overages or not being sure. You can monitor your use in self serve.

Hey Daniel, just a heads up that this is no longer the case with BlackBerry 10 Devices like the Z10, Q10, Q5 or Z30

It is however true of pre BlackBerry 10 devices (bold, curve, torch, storm)

As for the comment, once someone else has commented the system prevents you from editing your comment.

Goto blackberry world and uninstall / reinstall bbm.

And there is no charge for anything you do over wifi as far as koodo is concerned.
