A prerecorded message is much more clear than recording audio over the speaker of the phone; I am just checking to see if I can use a properly recorded mp3 for a phone message.

No, it is not possible to do this. If you want a recorded voice message, you must do it yourself with the Voicemail set up.

If you have the MP3 on your computer, have it set up where it will play as soon as you click it. So what I'm getting at is when you are prompted to leave your greeting, press play on the computer. Assuming the computer's volume isn't too loud and there are no other noises, you would have the song you want as the voicemail greeting. It's worth a try.
