I am a koodo customer who has the iPhone 4s and I'm planning to upgrade to the iPhone 5s. On koodo's website it says that the iPhone 5s 16 gb is $50 upfront with a monthly charge of $15 on the regular tab (correct me if I'm wrong). Is this a seasonal promo? If it is, I want to get it before the deal ends, however my mom is the manager of my family's koodo account and she's out of the country for the next two weeks. Can I still upgrade my phone and plan without her? Do I have to pay my tab balance of -$63 before I upgrade? What are the costs of upgrading phones? Thank you. :)

Hello Clarice,

There is currently a 224$ activation credit when you activate the iPhone 5S on a tab. These never last forever and can end at any time. If your name is on your phone (Eg: Your mom has the main line, you have a second line under the same account) and you are above the age of 18 you will be able to upgrade without her being there. You will be required to pay the remainning 63$ of your tab before activating again, but they will take care of all this for you. At the counter, expect to pay the 63$ of your current tab, 50$ for the iPhone and 5$ for a new SIM card (plus taxes for all the three items), which equates to roughly 133.34$ up front, plus 15$ +taxes every month.

Thank you so much for your quick response Mathieu. :) I was wondering how much money I'd get if I traded in my iPhone 4s or would I get store credit instead? I've heard it's better to sell it independently on sites like Kijiji but I'm not quite comfortable with that. And what ID would I need when I buy the phone? Is my driver's license fine?

The 4S is four generations old. It would be better to sell it, gift it to someone you know, or keep as a backup than to seek value on a trade-in. The value to a reseller is very low.

@ Clarice
Driver's license is fine.
And even if your name is registered under the authorized person, your mother(account owner) should call ahead Koodo and let them know you will purchase/upgrade your phone without mother.

I'm an authorized person and I went to Best Buy to purchase a phone awhile ago, but I had a difficult time to do it. They told me that account owner should call ahead if the autho person to  purchase phone.

Your mom needs to call Koodo at 1-647-788-4337 wherever she is and add you as an authorized user first . Once that's done, then you can go ahead with the upgrade and yes your drivers license would be fine as ID :)

As for trading in the phone, you'd probably MAYBE get $30-40.. You will get at least 2x any trade-in value,if not more, selling on Kijiji

I am just going to echo what Mayumi and Ahmad said and recommend you sell your phone on Kijiji, you could probably easily get around 100$ from them, and only pennies from Koodo. They were only offering 80$ for a S4 trade-in when the S4 was still the top samsung phone available....

Thank you all for your help. I got the iPhone 5s a couple of hours ago and I'm really happy with my purchase. :) I'm going to follow your advice and sell my iPhone on Kijiji.

The sales rep told me the deal ends today so I'm thankful for your quick and helpful responses which enabled me to take quick action.
