Iphone 4S bought in Canada, but now I am in Brazil and I simply can't use my Brazilian carrier.

Good morning everyone.

I bought an Iphone in January 2014 when I was in exchange in Canada, and the phone was unlocked. I passed sixteen months there using a Koodo prepaid chip and everything went well.

But now that I am back to Brazil, as I try to insert a chip from my carrier here, the phone doesn't accept it and the only way to pass the "error menu" is to remove the chip. Then, I am unable to use my phone anyways.

What should I do to fix this problem? Since I paid the full price for the phone when I bought it, this shouldn't be happening. Am I right?

Thank you,
Matheus.

Are you sure you bought your phone unlocked? Paying the full price doesn't mean unlocked

You need to have the phone unlocked so it will work with another carrier and make sure the other carrier does support that phone or it won't work.

Oh, I understand. Then I have to unlock it.

The thing is that in Canada I could use any carrier that I wanted, and then I choose Koodo. But, doesn't it indicate that the phone is unlocked? How could I use any carrier in Canada, but not even one carrier in Brazil?

Is it possible your phone isn't compatible with the available services in Brazil?

Hey Matheus,

In Brazil, Koodo is compatible with the following carriers: Oi (Central),TIM (Central),TIM (Rio North),TIM (Sao Paulo),Telefonica Minas Gerais (Vivo),Telefonica Sao Paulo (Vivo),Claro,Telefonica Central (Vivo),Telefonica Rio & North (Vivo),Oi (Sao Paulo, Rio & North) http://koo.do/Im7Mcg. Are you using your phone with one of them?

Thanks!

Hi Veronica. I am trying to use my phone with Claro, which is listed in your comment. Then why is it happening?

Did you originally purchase the phone from Koodo? If so and you never called Koodo to unlock it, then it was never unlocked.

If you bought it from Apple, you need to go to them.

I actually purchased it in one of Koodo's stores. Then, what is the procedure to unlock it? Thank you.

Hi Matheus, you'll find information about unlocking your phone on this link: http://koo.do/1bcvCKt. If your prepaid account is inactive for less then 90 days, you'll be able to restore it and top it up in order to be eligible. You can contact us from abroad at +1 647-788-4337. Thank you!

If you are planing to use your old Canadian phone in Brazil, forget it, even if it is not blocked in Canada. The problem is not the blocking system.. The Brazilian chip won't work (Tim in my case iPhone 4 or Nokia 610). The problem is that operators are blocking foreign phones. You can ask for a place to have it unlock to reach appropriate frequencies in São Paulo, and maybe else were in the country. I have no idea of the cost. You may waste time and money if you do so. I advise you, Brazilian speak Portuguese... nobody have a fluent English ... you will lost a day of your trip doing so with poor chances of success. Buying a phone in Brazil is expensive. Roaming doesn't work there because of blocking system. if you Walt to Try, buy a Chip 2.50 (5 Br$). If it works IN YOUR PHONE (not their), buy minutes and data. If not, forget your phone.
