If you are on airplane mode, then you wont be able to receive SMS.  You can receive imessage, facebook messages, whatsapp messages on wifi though

Also all texts included not only international but when you're outside of Canada incoming texts are free anywhere in the world. If you are concerned about data charges, all you need to do is shut off data in your settings.

Are you sure the incoming texts are free? Do I have to disable airplane mode to pick them up ?

Airplane mode is known as such because it shuts down all radio transmissions of any kind, so as to be "safe" for use in a plane. You have to disable airplane mode to communicate with it, even to connect to wi-fi and bluetooth.
This is the reference for it being included:

You can check US, outside of US, and it'll both say included incoming even without roaming add-ons.
