Koodo honesty...we called before we left. We wanted to receive texts from the kids. Yes, our phones will work in Europe they said. No, no they don't. We have unregistered sim message and the kids texts are not being received. If koodo had just been honest, we would have prepared differently. I'm a long time customer who will switch to Bell when we get back.

What phone have you got?

Did you add International voice roaming add ons before you left?

Where are you?

just because they will work in Europe doesn't mean the area you're in has compatiable frequencies. No company guarantees your phone will work while Roaming because they don't have control of the network of other countries.

Prepaid phones from virtually any carrier will not roam overseas unless you get them unlocked and buy a local SIM, so the following applies only for post-paid customers.

Check your plan add-ons in self-serve. Enable international voice roaming and international data roaming then restart the phone. Some people have complained they can’t find one or the other add-ons by using the Koodo app on the phone itself. In that case, use your browser and connect to self-serve that way. Both are listed at $0 per month and are needed in order to make any kind of connection outside North America. Apparently just doing the 00TEXT or 00BUNDLE to 5242 is not enough in some cases.
Instructions are at

Bundle or pay per use as you wish. If you are using a bundle, make sure to send the activating text while you are still in Canada. Expect a confirming text in return.

You also have the option of unlocking your phone and using a local SIM if that will be more advantageous. Some of the info is not completely up-to-date, but it’s a good start:

[Thanks to Robert].

Download Fongo. They give you a real Canadian phone # and you can call anywhere in Canada for free, regardless of where you are - providing that you have a wifi connection. You can then use this to call customer service at 1 (866) 995-6636. If you arrive overseas and have no service, this may be the only way to speak to someone at Koodo. [Thanks to Ivan].

Re-read your post...how does one enable international voice and data roaming? Is there added cost for this over and above the 60 cents per text?

Hello Sarah! Can you confirm if you are using our Prepaid or monthly services? Prepaid phones will not work while in roaming, but phones on Postpaid (monthly) accounts will. If you called in and were told that it will work, then I suspect you are using our monthly services. In that case, you can add the features through your self-serve http://koo.do/1TlXgoX account. You will need to add the "International Voice Roaming" feature so that your device can connect to a local carrier. If you wish to use data, you will need to add the "International Data Roaming" feature as well. Both of these features are free, but will enable your phone to connect to the local carrier. Please keep in mind that if you did not take a roaming package, you will be charged for each text sent, min of call (dialed or answered) and MB of data used. You can view the roaming pay-per-use rates here http://koo.do/trvllng. To add the feature, log into your self-serve and go to "change my plan" -> "change my monthly add-ons" section. I attached a screenshot to give you a better idea. Have a great trip!

OK Anna, I found it, and added the international voice roaming which I thought I already had because I was getting texts in the US. So here's some feedback for koodo...its great you monitor this community. It would be better if your website was cleared and easier to find stuff. Thanks for the support, Anna.

Aah, I see. The international voice roaming is not needed when travelling to the US, only when you leave North America. I'm glad that everything is working now, and I will pass your feedback along to the appropriate channels! :)
