I have a iPhone 4s on the classic tab small. My monthly plan is $15 (they don't have this plan anymore) plus $5 adds-on, so the total monthly fee is only $20.

Right now, I have $30 positive tab under my account. I want to switch to a new monthly plan, $28 or $30. However, I have to give up the 10% discount and give up further contribution to the positive tab. I am not sure if I can use the positive tab ($30) later when I want a new phone.

There are so many limitation as to switching monthly plans for old users. As a loyal user, I have been with them for almost 6 years. Now I am a bit upset in that they put a lot of obstacles between different plans.

Thanks for reading and any advice would be appreciated. I am in Ottawa, the capital region.

You can change plans whenever you would like to but you are correct in saying that you will lose the 10% discount. As well, the positive tab balance will continue to stay in your account until you choose to purchase a new phone in which the balance will be put towards the new phone you buy so need to worry about losing it!

Thanks a lot. It really clears thing outs. No more 10% discount means I am losing $3 a month if I choose $30 plan. It is cheaper than most of providers.

At least I still have my credits towards a new phone.

Thanks again.

@Tansy: You say you have an iPhone 4s with a positive tab balance, although your positive tab balance is only $30. You have essentially all options available to you. One thing that would help to know is what you are looking for in a new plan (more talk time, some data, etc.)

Based on various scenarios here's what I'd propose:

  • If you plan on continuing to use your iPhone 4s, you may prefer to switch to Public Mobile. They're a pre-paid "no frills" sub under Telus, with relatively competitive plans.
  • If you're planning on getting a new phone, the $30 tab credit is hardly worth any weight in deciding which phone/plan/carrier to go with. If you plan on sticking to iPhones, I think the iPhone 5s is going for dirt cheap (carriers are trying to liquidate). For Android, you'll get lightening years better handsets for less with LG X Power/Samsung Galaxy J3/Moto G4 Play, all available on tab 10 for most, tab 7 for QC.
  • You say you're in Ottawa, but you never revealed your province of residency (none of my business). If you can activate a new line with Koodo presenting Social Insurance Number, passport for photo ID, and a copy of a utility bill with a Quebec address, you'll have access to all the cheaper Québec plans (this requires acquiring a Quebec number at the time of activation). How you arrange to have a bill to your name with a Quebec address is none of my business. Keep a 613 number by porting it to Fongo (one-time fee of $25), then free call forwarding for life.

Technically the new plans already have the "10%" discount built in since it is the price of the plan when you do not have a tab.

Well, that's what happened to me with Virgin (7 years) and to my girlfriend with Rogers (over 10 years), that is the main reason we both moved to Koodo. If things do not work out for you I would recommend to move to the best option, never stay with a business just because you have been with them for several years, they do not usually care about that. That is the beauty of a free market. Good luck.

The thing I hated with the Virgin SuperTab back in the day was that when their plans changed and you had your grandfathered plans, they forced you to switch to a new/current plan when you wanted to upgrade your phone, even when you paid for the phone 100%.

With Koodo, if you are on a grandfathered plan you can always get the Tab small or buy the phone outright without forcing you to change plans :)

If you are looking for a new phone i would personally recommend the iPhone SE. Although it wont be as cheap as the 5s youll be able to get os updates longer as the 5s is one of the next to not recieve them.

Thanks Dennis, we have been with Koodo for just a few months and we have received an excellent service, not complaints for now. I hope it stays like that as we do not like moving around, however, it does not hurt to shop around and see if we are getting the best deal that fits our needs. Thanks Allan, your information is very valuable and appreciated. You both have a great day.
