Basically I have an old iPhone 4, and I don't need it any more. How do I find out if there's anything of mine on the phone (Ie pictures, contacts, anything of that sort...) and erase it so I can give it away or sell it? Furthermore to that, do I need to know anything special (Ie is it 'locked')

Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings

That's all you need to do

If you bought it from a carrier then it is locked to it! If you don't know, pop in any other SIM card (except Telus) to see if it locked or unlocked!

Unlock it through Koodo is just $35, so do that first otherwise the those unlocking guys out there charges well over $100 for the same thing
Also, make sure your phone is cleared of your content. The best way is probably restoring it from iTunes. If no computer, what Dennis suggest will do.

Yeah I'd recomend getting it unlocked that way it'll likely sell better.

You should always erase all data before selling any phone. I sold my iPhone 5 through http://www.sellmycellphones.com. All of the buyers that they compare ensure that all data is wiped from every device that they receive so I hope that gives you further peace of mind should you forget to do it.
