i want to get rid of my landline number and transfer it to my cell phone. will my landline number still be in the phone book?

As a cellphone number, it should not be published in future telephone directories.

It may take a while to fade away from some online directories.

You can have it listed if you wish. You do have to talk to your landline provider though. There is likely going to be a monthly charge to have it listed. Anywhere from $2-$4 or so. It's only free to list with your active landline account.
