I have a really good Koodo plan, unlimited messaging etc and 2gb of data per month. Is it true that if I want to get a different phone, the only way I can keep my existing plan would be to buy a new phone outright?

If you take a tab small or no tab: NO
If you take a Medium and your plan is less than 30$ per month: Yes it's true
If you take tab Large: Don't (terrible value) and yes you'd have to change your plan

I doubt that his 2Gb plan is under 30$ so for tab M he wouldn't need to change it.

Yeah, I thought so too but I like being general.

I just put my old sim card in an old phone and it works after going to settings and finding the network to connect to.

No, you can buy your phone on a Tab M or Tab S if you pay your remaining tab! No need to change your plan unless you want to use Tab L which I don't suggest
