I am considering ridding myself of my cellphone due to the ridiculous monthly fees

There are no monthly plans that cheap Unfourtunatley, your best bet is to check out Koodo's prepaid offerings. http://koodomobile.com/en/on/plansand...

Sixty minutes per month is a lot of emergencies! You can get service at the price point you are looking for if you consumed 20 minutes per month or less, but you would need to choose another provider.

This is the best I'd suggest for you

Public mobile is now a sister company of Telus & Koodo. You can unlock your Koodo phone and get a Public Mobile SIM installed and get activated at one of their kiosks.

At least you will have good coverage, never go over your limit and hang onto your current phone.

You could shave a few bucks here and there with some convenience-store plan but that means buying a new phone (usually not of the best quality) and maybe sacrificing coverage.

You don't even need to unlock your phone!

Even better! A relative bought an open-market phone to do this and needed unlocking. I eventually gave her my old Koodo slider with keyboard and they went on Public no problem. Advantage: you can switch back to Koodo if you grow out of the decidedly no-data Public Mobile system.
