I need to cancel my account and I have been on hold for an hour

I want to discontinue service and I have been told to contact 1-866-995-6636. I did and have been holding for an hour. Why am I not able to do this through self-serve???

Because Customer Service needs to be able to verify that is indeed you that wants to cancel your service.  Anyone could get into your account online and cancel your line

    There are many sites with similar credentials and login requirements, including banking sites. I doubt Koodo's self-serve site is any more likely to have 'anyone' get into one's account, and perform actions such as cancelling.

But then again, you can't close your bank account without talking to your bank.

I just called *611 to cancel and heard the "Important announcement" that I would be charged $10 for any changes to my account made by an phone rep. I hung up. But I see here that I can't cancel my account online.

So, is koodo going to charge me a $10 cancellation fee that I cannot avoid?

No. You only get charged for things you cant do yourself. If you wish to cancel you will not be charged.

However, if you wish to cancel, you are free to port your number to another carrier without calling in to Koodo. This will automatically cancel the line with Koodo. If you don't want to call, Virgin Mobile sim cards are $5, then you can call in and have the number ported to Virgin's pre-paid service (without having to top up).
