Nope no need to take out the SIM Card.

If your doing a factory reset for someone else to yluse the phone you do need to delete your google accounts prior to factory reset though. If your using the device again with the same Google account then you don't have to do anything but factory reset.
Make sure to back up your info though prior to factory reset

if doing a factory reset sim can stay in phone. but u need to backup all your stuff thats on the phone like pictures, texts etc as all that will be wiped.
copy all of the internal memory  files over to a computer. use googles backup service and in conjunction with any  3rd party app from the play store, use a separate sms/mms backup/restore app from play store.  save the backup to multiple places and to ur external memory card.
if u have an external memory card then remove it b4 resetting.
if keeping the same google account no need to remove account b4 resetting the phone.
once a reset is done it cannot be undone, theres no "undo" button

If installed, an external memory or SD card does not need to be removed, while performing a factory reset. A factory reset only erases the phones' internal storage and leaves data on the SD card intact.

true, but why take a chance, remove it just in case. better safe than sorry, literally takes a few seconds to do

Same reason we are saying not to remove your sim card. Its not necessary.

They would lose their files easier from physically losing a micro sd card after they have taken it out of their phone then they would from the phone glitching and somehow accidentally formatting the sd card.
Why take the chance of losing the tiny card and just leave it in a safe place!:)
