I could send the phone back for repair on March 1 but can I suspend service until it is fixed and I am back in Canada?

Well you can through selfserve but...

It's considered a change of plans. If you're on a plan that is no longer offered when you're ready to reinstate your service, you'll have to pick from whatever is currently available. That plan may be different from what you have now and you won't be able to get that old plan back.

Just get a local unlocked phone with a SIM card slot of the same size and similar network frequencies.

Might be the quickest and most convenient option

You're looking for a phone with the 850/1900 3G (HSPA/UMTS/WCDMA) frequency band support.
