How often does Koodo fraudulently sell used phones as new?

I was fraudulently given a used phone in place of a new one. After more than a year of problems my tab was waived (a bit under $44) as a gesture of goodwill.
So, I paid full price for a used phone, less a small discount and am supposed to be happy with this?
Very disappointed!

How do you mean they sold you a used phone? How could you tell it was used? Were there obvious signs?

its a system glitch. if the phone doesnt work simpky return it. if it works i wouldnt worry too much about it. :)

The phone was fine for about eight months. I then started having problems with the camera, then texting, then the dialer.
When I called to complain I was told :
Well you have to expect that when you buy a used phone!
That is how I know it was used. They told me it had been previously registered to Telus and recommended I do a reset. I did and after another 12 months of problems I called to complain, they waived my remaining tab and I guess that's it.
The fact is, they still sold me what was supposed to be a new phone when clearly it wasn't. They admitted it and apologized when I called last (when they cleared my tab)
Just wondering how many other times this has happened or if it was just one crooked sales rep at one location.
Trying to find another provider but sadly there aren't many with good plans where I live.

This is the first time I came across anything you mentioned Ken. Did they sell you the phone in a Koodo store. Have you gone back to them with your receipt? I would have though they simply just replaced your with a brand new one.

Usually phones that are previously activated but returned get sent back to a warehouse/repair centre for reassessment and if they're still good to be sold, they'll repackage everything and resell the phone as new. My guess is that's what happened.

Maybe the sales rep you spoke to had no idea it was used although I'm sure there's a way to check...

It was a used phone as confirmed by different Koodo reps.
I did not buy a used phone.
The last person I spoke to from Koodo seemed familiar with similar problems from the location where I got the phone. She even asked if I remembered the salespersons name. This is when she cleared my tab as a 'goodwill' gesture. It even says 'goodwill' on my bill.

You had the phone for almost 2 years (20 months based on your post) but koodo didn't have the One V until last year, so I'm a little confused as to how they sold a phone that they didn't have.

Just double checked my account, yes, It is an HTC One V and I have had it since July 2012. My wife got the same phone a few days later but from a different outlet and has had no problems.
Hers was new though.
Not sure where you got your info on when they started carrying it but that's what I have and it was available on line then as well.

This is a common retail practice, unless the item has some damage or defect it will get resold as new.

As Jonathan mentioned if there was nothing wrong with the device when it was return then it gets repackaged an sold as new.

Okay, but then to blame it on the customer that they have passed defective merchandise on to because I 'bought a used phone' which I clearly did not is an even lousier policy than that of lying about the phone being new to begin with.

This sounds like a detective story....hopefully we can find out what happened. So far then what we have is a rep told you that it was activated on telus before got it? Who blamed you and for what?

I was told I should expect problems when buying a used phone which I did not do. Or at least it was not supposed to be used.
The customer service person also seemed to be aware of other customers having had problems from the same location and rep that I initially got the phone from.
They did at least apologize and say that this is NOT the way they normally do business and that this practice is not allowed.

I don't really see how they're passing the blame onto you. The rep didn't necessarily mean it out of spite.

Even brand new One Vs had issues within months or even weeks of people owning them because it was a low-end, poorly manufactured/quality controlled HTC phone, unlike the Desire 601 (much better entry level device) and the flagship M8, which is quite possibly the best phone in the world because I have it :P Just search "One V issues" and you'll see what I mean.

Besides all that, even if your phone was certified brand new when you bought it, it was out of warranty when you started having issues with it and requested servicing. Now had it been under 1 year and THEN Koodo refused to service it, I'd definitely make a stink about it and you'd have my support, but the phone was already out of warranty, used or not. They were gracious enough to give you a credit as it is.

If you had taken this up with Bell they would have laughed at you and/or said "too bad, too late, pay the upgrade fee or leave".

The issues were all well within the warranty period if you are saying it was a year. They said there was no warranty nor was there ever as it was not a new phone even though that was what I paid for.
So in the end I am supposed to suck it up, even though I have been a victim of fraud as well as bait and switch.
This would not happen with Bell as I would not deal with them to begin with.
Sadly, Wind is not available yet where I live so I will get a lesser phone than I want and stick with Koodo for a little while longer.
Basically they are the lesser of the evils but they are catching up.

Oh, so it was a year. Might have missed that part. Well, then they should have offered to service it. But I know what happened.

An unfortunate side effect of how Telus and Koodo's inventory systems work is that once an IMEI is activated, even if the phone is returned under buyer's remorse, repackaged, and the IMEI revalidated by the store in conjunction with the channel support team to be resold as new, the counter for the warranty starts on the date it was activated and for some reason cannot be overridden, so you got stuck with it methinks. Hey, at least they worked out a solution for you, since it was a system error and not really anyone's fault or intent to harm.

If you do decide to leave Koodo for Wind when they come to your area, then good luck...

I'd be very upset if I bought a phone as new (implying a 1 year warranty) only to find out that i was sold a returned phone, because depending on when it's resold - you could lose a lot of warranty.
