How do I stop automatic updates?

I have a Galaxy Ace for myself and my son. I always get notices to advise me when an update is available for download and I make the choice to download it. We each only have the limited data package and so we try not to use it, but he tells me that he doesn't get update notices...things automatically update even with the Packet Data off (or it's automatically updating when he turns on the packet data infrequently), but it is causing the data usage bill to be higher than it needs to be...does anyone know how to stop the automatic updating?

For example...google maps updates...there seems to be no way in the managing applications section to mark something as no automatic updates. And if he goes to GooglePlay where Google Maps is located and it has a checkmark in the area for automatic updates, if he unchecks it, it does not stay unchecked.

Go into Google play and in the settings menu you can shut it off or each app in the play store will have the option to. You can also have it set to only us date over wifi if you have wifi at home it will wait to update till you get home or to any wifi. - KID ANDROID, ( Team.Android.Canada)

Hi, if I go into Google Play and I look up Google Maps, for example, this is the area where if he removes the checkmark for automatic updates, it disappears the minutes he leaves (if he goes back in, it's chceked again). He could uninstall completely, I suppose. I don't see a settings area in Google Play.

And if he goes to the settings section on his managing apps area of the phone, this area only gives the option of uninstalling all recent updates.
Am I missing something?

When you go into Google play hit the menu button on the phone (looks like lines) from there a menu will pop up. Select settings and you'll see update automatically, make sure it's Not checked off. Let me know if you find it now.

Yup, found it! But it was already checked off only for receive notifications of updates and unchecked for automatic updates.

Try un checking it from the maps app in Google play then immediately turn the phone off or pull the battery.

NP. That's the last option I can think of because I've never seen the check box become checked off by its self. Hope it helps :-)
