I have a galaxy S2x with Koodo mobile in Canada, model SGH-T989D. Does anyone know if Kies works via USB on this phone, because after many tries I can't get Kies to see the phone using the USB cable. Thus without Kies, how do I back up my apps and settings? And how do I do the 4.1 Android update?

Kies Air works fine, as does connection of the phone to the computer using Windows Explorer (Win7 64 bit), but I don't think these methods can be used for Android update or backup of settings. Kies does not detect my phone when it is connected by USB cable.

Make sure the S2x has at least an 80% battery charge or better. Disconnect the S2x from your computer. Reboot your computer and start Kies. On the S2x, go to Settings > Developer Options - enable USB debugging and select OK. Return to the Home screen.

Tap the Phone icon and from the dialer pad, enter *#7284# (under the heading UART, place the green dot on PDA. Under the heading USB, the green dot should already be on PDA). Use the back key to return to the Home screen.

With Kies running, connect the S2x via USB, Kies should detect the device and you'll be able to do the backup and start the 4.1 upgrade.

These settings will revert back to their original values when you reboot or upgrade the S2x.
