I am a recent customer of Koodo ... I subscribe to the Canada-Wide Talk + Text 25 Dbl Plan ... 200 Anytime minutes, Unlimited Evenings (7pm) and Weekends, Voicemail included ... for $25.00/month.

This works just fine for me ... always good signal strength ... $23 less than what my landline used to cost.

I subscribe to an Internet Access plan from another carrier (for my usage, Koodo's services would cost me $25/month more than this other plan) ... 99% of the time, I access the Internet from my Computer and Tablet.

Very occasionally, I would like to access the internet from my phone ... but not through Koodo's Data Services ... instead, I would like to connect via the Hot Spot device of the Internet Service Provider ... unfortunately, as soon as I change Wi-Fi to 'ON' on my phone (Samsung Ace IIx), and before I can choose my connection, Google Play (and perhaps some other services) start to use the Data Connection provided by Koodo ... and these few seconds of activity add $5/month to my Bill (as per the Pay Per Use Data Saver feature that comes with the plan I subscribe to.

Question 1 ... how can I make sure that I do NOT connect to the Internet from my phone via Koodo's Data Service ?

It has been suggested that I uncheck the Data Enable option on my phone ... but that would also prevent me from connecting to another service as well.

I was told by a Koodo Service representative that I could subscribe to a "Data Saver Light Weight" option ... but I can not find it anywhere on the Koodo website.

Question 2 ... assuming that Question 1 is not possible, can I purchase a Data Booster option with my current plan ? ... or is this only available to subscribers of the 'Pre-Paid Plans' ?

The booster option has the the advantage of not expiring ... which would then end up costing me far less in the long run than the current $5/month charge (for the few seconds of usage).

Hi Gaev,

How recent a customer are you? Because all Koodo's new plans already include data, there is no more a data saver which distinguishes between light or heavy :)
Data is counted up to 25MB will be $5, from 25 to 100MB $10, etc... so you never pay too much.
As you said, you can disable data altogether, but you wouldn't be able to send picture messages (MMS) any longer. If that is not an objection, that will be your cheapest option.
Data boosters, alas... they are only available for prepaid!

Sophia, thank you for your response.

I was aware of the "Pay Per Use Data Saver" feature that comes with my plan ... it is the $5/per month that I am trying to avoid ... as I already pay another service for my Internet Access (from my PC and Tablet).

I do not send picture messages ... so the limitation of disabling data is something I will check out.

Disabling the mobile data option on the samsung galaxy ace 2x will only turn off the 3G data connection. It has absolutely no effect on the wifi connection.

Thank you Timo ... I will try that.

You could also add the data block add-on to your plan to prevent any data charges from koodo. As you might already know, that would prevent you from send/receiving mms (pictures messaging). You could add it via self serve or dialing *611 from you phone to contact customer service (free of charge). The add-on is free.

I had read similar responses on the forum last week ... but when I tried to gfollow the instructions for doing it via self service, the options on the Koodo website did not match the instructions ... at the time, I thought that perhaps this option was not available for my (monthly) plan.

So I would appreciate it if you could post 'step by step instructions' for doing so.

Thank you.

I had to add the data block to my son's phone as even though I had "data enabled" unchecked he still occasionally had small bits of 3g data when he was connecting to wifi. It started to add up on our bill.

Beth, thank you for sharing this tidbit of information ... this is what I was experiencing.

I hope that "adding data block" is something done at Koodo's end and not in my phone ... because, unlike your son, I still want to use Data (albeit occasionally), just not via Koodo's Data Service.

Hi Gaev, in order to add the "Block Data" feature on your account, simply give us a call (no fees). We can be reached at *611 from your cell or 1-866-995-6636 from a landline, option #5.
