How to turn off cellular data for apps?

I have an iPhone 5c and have iOS 8.4.1 with the $30 plan (100 MB of data per month). I found that I was running out of data on my phone even with cellular off, and not having used data for anything, and was thinking
that one of my apps working in the background was to blame. So I went to the cellular data screen and found that I couldn't turn off cellular for any of my apps...they were greyed out! Is there any way that I can turn off the cellular data for my apps so that I don't waste my data?

Screen shots of my cellular data tab in the settings app: (I know it says 0 MB used this month but that was because I reset statistics by accident. Before, it said something like 94.5 MB.) (And sorry, they're in the wrong order :P)

Hello Stuart

You're cellular data is already off. Once you close cellular data with the big toggle (the first one labelled : cellular data) everything will be off. No more need to close the specific app. If you want to close it to prevent future mistake, reactivate the first toggle, close the data for that application, then close the first toggle back.

OK, thanks Robert. So what could be causing the data to be used up if my data has been off? I haven't touched the data on/off switch since the beginning of the month yet almost all of the monthly allowance was used up...?

Oh, it was off since the beginning! I thought you just turned it off! That is weird indeed. when you go and look at your data usage online, what does it show?

Looks like you just reset your data statistics. If u keep data off then your data stats should remain 0. If if still uses data you would have definitive proof to show koodo

Does that version of iOS have "Wifi assist"? If it does...TURN IT OFF!

Wifi Assist will activate your cellular data connection if your wifi is slower than iOS finds acceptable.

It's really annoying that Apple turned it on by default.

Wifi assist is only on iOS 9 and more! It is really annoying indeed ans this is why people filled a lawsuit against them :P

I agree...heard about the wifi assist thing and it's really annoying! However we haven't updated to iOS 9 yet so I don't think that would apply to us...

Is there a reason you didn't upgrade to 9 iOS yet?

I'm sure that it is a great article but this thread is 2 years old. Whatever the issue was is long since resolved.
