How to top up a prepaid SIM without having a canadian credit card and possibility to go to a shop that sells Koodo Vouchers?

My daughter is in Canada for three months and goes to a school. I gave her a Koodo prepaid SIM with 20$ value and activated it.

Problem is now to top up the prepaid account. The only possibility seems to be to have a Canadian credit card or get a top up Voucher at a shop.
But there seem to be no shop is the small valley she goes to school (Trochu/Alberta) that sell Koodo vouchers. And she does not have the possibility/transportation to go to a shop outside this valley.
She has a VISA credit card, but is is not Canadian. It is European.

How can we top up the prepaid SIM. Ist there any way either
- to buy the top up vouchers online,
- use an european credit card, or
- top up by doing a banking wire transfer to a bank account of Koodo, or
- pay via Paypal, Amazon, or
- any other possibility
?

Do you or your daughter have a Canadian debit card with VISA Debit?  Koodo accepts VISA Debit cards as payment

She does not have a canadian debit card. And it guess that it will be no easy to get such a debit card as the is less that 16 years old.

Before I bought the Koodo prepaid SIM I did never thought that it would be complicated to top up the prepaid SIM. Here in Germany we can get prepaid vouchers at nearly any gas station and supermarkets for nearly ann mobile network operators. And we can do also do a banking transfer to an account  of the mobile network operator. There are also several service organisations selling vouchers online on the internet.

Is it like this for all mobile phone providers in Canada that they only accept canadian debit cards and credit cards? Or is ist just Koodo? Which mobile network operator can be recommended?

Which mobile network operator in canada accepts non Canadian credit cards or allows to buy vouchers online?

Yes, I have already looked into this, but I have not seen any in Trochu Alberta. That's the problem.

She can obtain a debit card by opening an account at the Bank of Montreal branch in town. There are no age restrictions for debit cards in Canada. I'm not sure if they offer Visa debit, though. There should be an ability to purchase vouchers at just about any gas bar, and at the Home Hardware store in town.

Bernard or someone from Koodo would have to verify, but this might be a possibility. Canada Post office and those banks are pretty much everywhere, though fees will apply. The card could be used for other Canadian expenses as well.

I missed that she has a Visa card. It may be possible to confirm the card with Koodo by calling in, and then make top-ups.

"There are no age restrictions for debit cards in Canada.". An they accept to open an account for a non Canadian minor without the signature of their parents? Without having any
legal capacities?

Seems to be a strange way to top up a prepaid SIM by open an new bank account.
She already has a VISA credit card  which is accepted in Canadian shops and banks.

Is there no way I can transfer money to the Koodo prepaid SIM other than using a Canadian debit/credit card? No alternatives?

"I missed that she has a Visa card. It may be possible to confirm the card with Koodo by calling in, and then make top-ups."

Is this possible? Can someone from Koodo verify this that a non Canadian VISA prepaid credit card is accepted by calling in?

https://prepaidselfserve.koodomobile.com  tells "We accept Visa®, MasterCard® and American Express® credit cards, as well as Visa Debit cards.
Note: Only a credit or Visa Debit card registered to a Canadian/U.S. address can be registered to your account. Other International credit/Visa Debit cards are not accepted."

Is it common for Canadian mobile network operators only to accept Canadian/US credit cards?

There have been exceptions to the quote above.

Generally, yes, Canadian telecommunications companies to accept only Canadian credit cards (US cards are also not accepted). Telus will accept top-ups through Interac for their pre-paid product. There are also third party suppliers who will charge a premium for the transaction.

I still believe Home Hardware is the best option.

A non-Canadian pre-paid Visa, would not be accepted.

I found a number of offers with a web search using the term "koodo mobile prepaid top-up". I have not used any, so cannot comment on their reliability.

Thanks. Unfortunately I have only seen recharge.com which seems to be not trustworthy. There seem to be no other suppliers. 99% just links to koodomobile.com .

what forms of ID does your daughter have with her? I would assume she would have a passport at the very least.  Does she has anything else?  I would find it hard to believe that the BMO (Bank of Montreal) would not allow her to open a banking account.  Age 16 is a pretty reasonable age to start having your own bank account.  With a bank account I beleive you can set it up to automatically debit the account monthly to top up a Prepaid Koodo account.  Your daughter could also try contacting Koodo to officially register the International Credit card as a form of payment as well.  I do know by default international cards are not accepted, but on post paid account they can be verified and registered to be used.  I understand that it is frustrating, but I am sure there is a solution out there somehow

Thanks for your reply. I wrote that my daughter is less than 16 years old. Means she is not 16 years old. Can you assure that a girl with 15 years is allowed to open an account without signature and official agreement of their parents at the BMO? Just with the official but non Canadian passport?

"Your daughter could also try contacting Koodo to officially register the International Credit card as a form of payment as well."

Can someone here from Koodo officially  reply if it is possible to add a non canadian credit card to the account? What steps are needed to do this?

Are there any officials from Koodo here at this forum?

Glad you got your answer, Willi! Just a heads up that if she buys the $25 booster, she can call Germany for 25 cents/minute :)

Calling Germany ist not the problem. Using WiFi it costs 0 (zero) cent per minute using Voice Over IP (VOIP: Internet) to call Germany. She needs Koodo to get internet access where there is no WifFi.

Thanks a lot to all. Very glad about this!

My daughter bought the vouchers and I have just added the to the account. Base plan ist now added so she has "Unlimited Text & Picture Messaging, Unlimited Province-wide Calling and 2 GB Data".
This also shows up on the account.

A small question:
- How can she see how much data is used? Of course Android support to see data usage on mobile, but this may not be 100% with what Koodo has.

Is there an Android app for this? If not is there a possibility to show this on the phone other than opening the brwoser and login to https://prepaidselfserve.koodomobile.com/Overview/

No, the Self-serve portal is the only way to access the info in the manner you wish.

Willi, in addition to checking self service, she can dial 611 from her phone and choose option 3, it will tell her exactly how many booster minutes (if any) and data she has left on her plan. Other than that, no there is no app for Koodo prepaid usage.

Edit: I only use the $15 base plan though, so I'm not entirely sure if it will mention the data within the plan (mine just tells me about booster data that is left).
