How to have a REAL and FULL backup? (LG5)

I had my LG5 for repair. Now it came back - so far so good ...However, restoring it doesn't seem to work.

Background: Before I sent it away, I created a back-up (through the Settings app/LG Back UP, saved to Google Drive) and wiped the unit. This morning, when I wanted to bring the LG5 back into operation, I signed in with my google account and was asked if I wanted to set up as a new phone or restore from back-up. I chose the latter and picked the last LG5 back-up. And indeed, a bunch of apps got downloaded and updated (took ages), but app install was about all that was restored - not even the homescreen looks the same.  Worst of all, I lost all account info (for all apps, for my 10 email accounts) and wifi passwords, etc ...(even though I had 'back-up data' enabled).  It's like I have to get an entirely new phone going. What am doing wrong?  This should be easier, no?

thanks for your help!

Your email addresses don't get backed up you have to enter those manually. Backups only do partial backups and even then it's only what you select to be backed up. A combination of Google and LG or Samsung or whatever manufacturer makes the phone is the best way I've found but still will not back up things like your account logins just the info that is behind those logins.

what about wifi passwords?  According to my research they should be retrieved if back up data is ON. (as it was).

If you go back to the settings app/LG Back UP, is there an option to restore from there?

Thanks Dennis ... no ... there is the LG Backup Launcher, but from the settings app it cannot be launched. At least I don't see how.

However, through the LG management group there is the back-up app and that's what I used in addition to the google restore ...

Google can backup certain apps, but not all.

LG has its own app called: LG Bridge. That one can backup/Restore almost everything to desktop including settings of your home screen, your settings of your LG, etc.

In the LG apps in the device, there is also an app that works with LG Bridge: LG mobile switch.

I do embrace Google services ... my photos are on my SD card AND on google photos, I don't keep documents on my phone, really, but what I really NEED is that when I restore my phone it is usable and doesn't ask me all the stupid questions again and want to show me all the wonderful tutorials .... argh.

Again, I have come to accept that I have to set up all my social media apps, email, loyaltiy apps, etc. I may even be ok with the fac that now when I look at my gallery the oldest item shows on top (WTF????)

To fix the gallery issue you should just be able to change the "sort by" in the settings.

When I updated my last phone, all my apps, email, and passwords transferred over. I had to set up a few personal identity things on the phone, and swip through the What’s New stuff, but that was it.

Allan, yes I can change the 'sort' but next time I have to change it again .... like if I want to attach a couple of pictures ... for each I have to re-set the sorting .. .unless there is a way to fix that permanently.  Is there, please be specific as to which 'settings' you are referring to. BTW new pictures are sorted newest first .... heaven help me.

It's a little late now, but LG does provide a way to back up / restore everything on some models to an SD card or your PC.

Never to late to improve one's approach so that next time the transission is smoother, so, thank you so much, Bob. However, that's exactly what I did. I have the back-up folder of November 17, 2017 on my SD card and still ... the qaulity of the restore sucks.

Android has historically been inferior when it comes to backups. Pretty much every other platform has allowed me to easily restore everything from a backup. Certain Android forks (Xiaomi, to my knowledge) support full backups.

I do have a workaround. I use Microsoft Launcher, which supports OneDrive backup of your home screen layout. There are other launchers you can use to do the same thing. Basically, I let Google services handle the apps and such and the launcher does the rest. It's not the most elegant solution, but it works.

Depending how involved you want to get, you can do a NANDroid backup using a custom recovery. Root may or may not be required depending on your device. I personally use TWRP

I'll check that out, thank you Dennis.
